In general, it is very hard for untrained people to locate listening devices.
Bugging devices can be very small and may be hidden in every day objects that are normally in your home. So, the bug may be hiding in plain sight. For instance, bugging devices may be hidden in furniture, wall clocks, pens, calculators or other items. Your electronic devices and technology services may also be compromised.
Often, bug detectors that are sold to the public, alarm on any type of electronic device or only the strongest signal. If that happens to you, how will you be able to tell if your bug detector found an actual listening device? It takes the right equipment and expertise to locate eavesdropping devices and vulnerabilities.
